Will my frige leak freon if I leave it unplugged?

Our Fridge has stopped working and our landlord refuses to replace it and since its not truely our we can't get rid of it. Our freezer makes a loud sound that reminds me of a lawnmower and I want to unplug it so we don't have to hear it. But someone told me that freon will leak or make the fridge explode.. Please help someone!!!
