Lawnmower briefly ran with oil cap loose?

An ounce or two of oil escaped will not damage the engine. It is normal for oil to be hot when the engine is hot. When engine oil is gray it is a sign of moister mixed with the oil and is not normal. Change the oil and store your mower in a sheltered place when not in use.
