Can a tree be planted any time of the year besides winter? If not, when?

I have 3 maple trees and 1 pine tree, but they are very small and cannot be planted without the lawnmower going over it. I have 2 big maples though, and I need them planted. Does anyone know if it is a good idea to plant them anytime besides winter?
